Gas Log Set Installation and Service in Portland, OR
A gas log set turns a wood-burning fireplace into one you light with a switch — real flame, no hauling wood, no ash to shovel out. We install log sets across the Portland metro and Vancouver WA, and we service the ones already in place.
Vented or vent-free — your fireplace decides
A vented log set burns with the damper open and vents up the flue, exactly like a wood fire. It gives you the tall, yellow, realistic flame most people picture. Almost all of the heat goes up the chimney, so treat it as ambiance rather than a heater.
A vent-free log set burns much cleaner and puts its heat into the room, but it also puts its combustion moisture into the room, and it is limited by the size of the space and by local code. Not every fireplace and not every room is a candidate.
Which one your fireplace can take depends on the firebox, the flue, the gas supply and the room — not on preference. That is the first thing we check, before anyone talks about models.
What a proper installation involves
A log set is a gas appliance, and the install is gas work, not decorating. We confirm the fireplace is sound and the flue is clear, verify the gas line size and pressure, fit a shutoff you can actually reach, set the burner and grate to the manufacturer's clearances, and lay the logs in the exact pattern the manufacturer specifies.
That last part matters more than it sounds. Logs placed a few centimetres off the specified pattern make the flame hit them wrong, and that is where sooting, carbon build-up and black glass come from. We finish by running the unit and checking the flame pattern before we leave.
When a log set is right — and when an insert is the better buy
Choose a log set if you want the look of a fire on demand in a fireplace you already like, and you are not trying to heat the room. It is the lower-cost way into gas.
Choose a gas insert if you want the fireplace to actually produce heat. An insert is a sealed unit with its own liner, and it turns the opening from a hole that loses warm air into a genuine heater. See fireplace inserts.
We will tell you which of the two fits what you are trying to achieve, including when the answer is the cheaper one. The estimate is free and in writing either way.
Service for a log set you already have
Log sets need the same annual attention as any gas appliance. The usual calls we get: the pilot will not stay lit, the flame has gone lazy and orange, the glass or the surround has blackened, the logs have shifted, or a remote or wall switch has stopped talking to the valve.
A service visit covers the pilot assembly and thermocouple, the burner ports, the log placement, the venting, and a check that the unit is burning the way it should. See gas fireplace service and gas fireplace repair.
FAQs
Can I put a gas log set in my existing wood fireplace?
Usually yes, if the firebox and flue are in sound condition and gas can be run to the fireplace. We check the masonry, the flue and the gas supply first — a log set does not fix a chimney that needs repair.
Do I need a chimney if I have a gas log set?
For a vented log set, yes — it vents up the flue and the chimney has to be sound and clear. A vent-free set does not vent up the flue, but it has its own room-size and code limits, which is why the fireplace and the room both get checked before we recommend one.
How much does a gas log set cost to install?
It depends on the set you choose and on what the gas supply and fireplace need. We give a free written estimate before any work starts, so you see the whole price before you decide.
Why is my gas log set making the glass and the logs black?
Almost always the logs have been moved out of the manufacturer's pattern, or the burner ports are partly blocked. The flame then strikes the logs instead of burning clear of them, and you get carbon. It is a service call, not a replacement.
